Hello everybody, I recently received my uncle's old laptop. That machine still runs Windows Vista ... I'm planning to use this as a 'test machine' for the Windows 10 technical preview. However I'm not sure if I may install the 64 bit version or not. The current OS is Windows Vista 32 bit but when I check out the processor's page on Intel's website, it seems 64 bit capable: http://ark.intel.com/fr/products/35583/I...B-Socket-P So here's my simple question: can I install the 64 bit Windows Technical Preview on this laptop? TIA

Sure, but I’d only suggest it if you have at least 4GB of RAM, otherwise it might not be worth it.

Completely 64-bit, provided the system allows it.

The laptop supports 4 GB of RAM. Your response was prompt, but I wanted to double-check everything. (What makes sense for a 64-bit system to run on a 32-bit OS?)

When you connect the right ARK page, you can use the 64-bit version of Windows without issues. It’s advisable to choose the 64-bit edition here for two main reasons. First, Vista was the initial Windows OS to fully support 64-bit, and later updates like XP introduced necessary changes. Second, 64-bit processes weren’t widely available at the time, so many older releases used 32-bit simply to maintain compatibility. Additionally, systems with less than 4GB of RAM saw minimal impact from this change. It might also relate to cost, as 32-bit licenses for older versions were cheaper than 64-bit ones, so companies opted for savings.

It doesn't appear to be an issue, but you could face driver problems with certain hardware on the notebook if it's outdated (such as chipset, wireless adapter, touchpad, etc.).
