So the OC isn’t really worth it, except for checking benchmarks if I ever upgrade. The stock speed didn’t stay at 100% across many cores, and disabling hyperthreading dropped my gaming FPS by about 10 points in tests, which means Hyperthreading is necessary. I just need to make sure the CPU temperature stays stable even with a small OC. I can’t afford another CPU if it overheats.
It would be wise to attempt manual overclocking. The i7-8086K has the potential to perform even better and run faster. I can successfully maintain all-core, all-thread performance at 5.1 GHz with a Core Voltage of 1.30V (CPU Load-Line calibration raises it slightly to 1.32V). This version isn't overly affected, though it performs better on a custom water loop.
My cooling performance is quite poor—about 1 less than 1000 RPM on the side of the heatsink/cooler. I was surprised that the stock didn’t damage my CPU. During a stress test with two threads, all cores reached 70 degrees at stock temperature.
Mine performed well, especially on my 8700k. Voltage stayed around 1.4+ and it still worked. If I weren’t sure, a manual clock of 5.0 and 1.32v would be fine. Either option is better than the stock if you use it heavily. Hope this helps avoid any regret about not going red team at the time.
You have up to 100c before you have to worry. Rule of thumb is keep all cores under 90c Is your cooler really doing that bad now that you know the figures above? (I think not) Edit, 70c on only 2 threads? Maybe so?!
