Is cooling active for VRMs required on X99?
I just updated my chip from the old model to a newer one and it performs excellently. Previously, starting Windows at 4.5GHz was difficult with anything under 1.3v, but now the CPU runs smoothly at 1.18v at the same speed. I usually wanted to keep it there, but I found an overclocking guide from Asus suggesting active cooling for VRMs above 4.0GHz on the 5960X. After checking VRM temperatures in AI Suite, they were around 50°C at idle and rising to the low 70s when under load. Although most VRMs handle higher temps, I’m worried about long-term effects without active cooling.
The temperatures seem just right. If needed, you can introduce some airflow using case fans to make it even better.
