Is a New Display Causing Jerky Game Performance?
Hello,
I’ve recently transitioned from a 1080p 60Hz television to a 2K 144Hz monitor – specifically, an ASUS PG279Q. When viewing games on my TV, I consistently achieved high settings and, in several instances, fully maximized visuals at a consistent 60 frames per second, resulting in exceptionally smooth performance. However, with my new monitor, the experience is markedly different. Even at 60Hz (and despite enabling G-SYNC), 60fps often appears noticeably jerky, and with games set at 75-144Hz, depending on the title, which is satisfactory. While some may suggest this is simply a matter of acclimation to higher frame rates, in certain games, even 90fps can exhibit a pronounced sense of choppiness. I initially anticipated that motion blur would mitigate this issue, but it hasn’t been particularly effective. I've encountered discussions about frame time as well, though it remains somewhat complex for me to fully understand.
I firmly reject the notion that this is solely due to my adjustment to higher frame rates, as the distinction is quite significant. Previously, 60fps always appeared remarkably pleasing, but now, the prospect of achieving 60fps feels disappointing – it simply *looks* subpar. In fact, I’m even considering that some console games running at 30fps might appear superior because of the pronounced choppiness I’m experiencing. To clarify, this isn't stuttering; it’s a distinct form of choppiness that I find difficult to adequately describe.
Thank you.
I apologize for the lack of precision in my previous communication. I have recently upgraded from a 1080p television to a 2K display. Here are my system specifications:
EVGA RTX 2080ti
Ryzen 7 2700x
32 gigabytes of RAM
Hard disk drive combined with a solid-state drive
Motherboard: Asus Crosshairs VII
I employ a display port connection. Honestly, 90 frames per second appears quite impressive and is remarkably fluid, though I rarely consistently achieve that rate. I’ve noticed that certain games which dip into the 60s can appear noticeably stuttery.
