I'm assembling a system with an i7 4790k and a GTX 970. With a 600 watt PSU available, I'm questioning whether it's sufficient for a successful overclock.

A good 500-600w unit is sufficient. You should consider the xfx 550w options—they offer a balance between cost and performance.

600w exceeds what you really need. Consider switching to an Evga Supernova Gs 550W. In short, you should opt for a 550W to 600W power supply unit that's a tier 1 or 2 model—anything lower could put your components at risk.

A solid 500-600w setup is more than enough. You should consider models like the xfx 550w—they offer a great balance of price and performance. I've been building PCs for a while, and the SeaSonic G Series 550-Watt 80 plus gold is one of the top choices. The XFX ones aren't bad, but this particular model really stands out.

Confirming that a suitable 500-550W power supply is adequate for overclocking with one CPU and one GPU.
What brand were you considering?
Check here for a year-old Seasonic SSR-550RM at a discount (assuming you're in the continental U.S.). Seasonic is considered the leading manufacturer of power supplies.
Edit: lol thanks for the help, jragonsoul
