IPMI is a capability built into the CPU, not the motherboard. It works when paired with compatible CPUs like the i7-10700K, but you still need a CPU that supports IPMI to enable it. The Supermicro board itself doesn’t provide IPMI; it depends on the CPU’s support.

It's built into the motherboard, regardless of the CPU you choose. You could even rely on IPMI if no CPU is present, though it won't be very helpful in that case. Which Supermicro board are you thinking about? As far as I understand, Core processors aren't compatible with the C256 chipset on those boards, so you'll need a Xeon instead for the system to start up.

I have a memory of a Raspberry Pi project that might allow IPMI control for typical desktop PCs. I recall the components were out of stock at the time. The total cost isn't clear, and it's uncertain what setup is required. It could be an interesting option worth exploring further.

This project is solid and works well, though it doesn't fully replace IPMI. You'll be missing out on certain capabilities such as temperature and power tracking. With genuine IPMI you can typically perform BIOS flashback and install an operating system over a network connection. The Pi KVM serves as a useful alternative for servers, but true IPMI would be ideal if possible.

Intel also offers VPRO which includes many of the same features as IMPI but is designed for workstations. You must use a CPU with VPRO activated and a compatible board. The supported chipset families are Q and W series, while standard gaming and consumer boards don't support VPRO.
