Investing in Ryzen 3rd gen offers great value today
I'm considering whether to move to a Ryzen 3rd gen now or wait for the 4th generation. My current HTPC has been running nonstop since October 2012 and needs serious upgrades. It often freezes and becomes unresponsive, requiring a hard reset to get it back. I'm thinking about transferring my existing 1st gen setup to an upgraded system. If I upgrade, I'd replace the Ryzen 7 1700 with a 3rd gen model and move the hardware to my HTPC. I plan to add a Ryzen 3900x, a 16GB RAM system with an NVMe SSD as the boot drive, and possibly keep the GTX 1060 if I upgrade the GPU. The target specs include a Gigabyte X570 processor, 32GB RAM, and an NZXT Kraken X73 motherboard. Given the HTPC's usage by my dad across time zones with poor internet, it runs Plex and needs stable performance. Upgrading now could be beneficial because the current setup is under heavy CPU load from transcoding, making the switch worthwhile.
Without digging into finances. If you are looking to upgrade go for it. ryzen 3000 is a solid product with its kinks worked out. If you wait for 4000 you will be an early adopter with whatever that brings. Can always upgrade to 4000 later if you feel like it. might dodge your plex going down too
I get what you mean, though it seems like a quirky suggestion. Still, I’m worried that the Ryzen 4000 could offer some real benefits. If I had waited a little longer, I might have secured one. It’s funny how people react when new CPUs launch—some think the next model will be superior, while others doubt the current one. Being an early adopter also means dealing with unresolved issues that still need fixing. In my view, getting the 3900X and then moving to the 4000X if it performs well could undermine the value of choosing such a powerful CPU right now. But honestly, since the 3900X works well on my x370 board thanks to compatible BIOS updates, I’m not sure I’d change it.
