I constructed a setup some time back: CPU i7-4770k MOBO GA-Z87M-D3H rev 1.0 OLD RAM G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB @ 1600 MHz / slots 2 and 4 NEW RAM G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB @ 1600 MHz / slots 1 and 3 I aimed to expand to 16 GB (4x4GB) from 8 GB (2x4GB) and I sought the closest compatible pairs to prevent issues. Both sets functioned independently but clashed when paired, leading to BSODs with KERNEL_SECURITY_ERROR after some time. I can boot into Windows and run programs but experience erratic crashes. I’ve rearranged the sticks and enabled memory interleaving in BIOS without success. I’m considering purchasing another batch but doubt it’s worth it. Below is a picture of the two groups: top pair shows newer sticks, bottom older ones. ** SOLVED ** It turned out the paging file Windows generated was causing trouble, so I had to remove it (perhaps just resetting it, but I turned it off to confirm).

Verify that all four slots function correctly. Test by installing one stick at a time, moving it from slot 1 to slot 4, observing changes. If everything works, note that the part numbers of the new and old kits differ. Timings for secondary and tertiary functions might vary, leading to instability. Install one kit, boot into BIOS, record the memory timings. Next, install another kit alone (using just two sticks), boot into BIOS, record its timings. Compare the values and adjust them manually. Finally, attempt to boot with all four sticks installed.

I attempted that as well, and according to what I understand, the timings were quite alike. I’m not entirely confident about the meaning of 'tertiary timings'—are they just the third number in 9-9-9-24, or does it refer to a different setup? Either way, I’ve resolved the problem and updated my post to share the solution with others.
