Internet speed dropping to nothing when I restart my PC.
Hello, I just did a fresh install of Windows on my PC. Right now, my internet speed is dropping to zero and changing all the time. This never happened before me. I unplugged my router, tried updating my drivers again, and even changed the Ethernet cable. I know nothing about how networks work, so I don't know what else to try. I have gigabit speed internet. My two roommates are fine with their network, but they aren't having these problems. Any help would be awesome here. Here is my ethernet graph: Graph Here is my ipconfig: Windows IP Configuration Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DESKTOP-6C3RI81 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : myfiosgateway.com Ethernet adapter Ethernet: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : myfiosgateway.com Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel® Ethernet Connection (7) I219-V Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 70-85-C2-D1-4B-65 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.6(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Friday, January 13, 2023 4:13:07 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, January 14, 2023 4:53:37 PM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
I used to feel like my computer was going crazy with cold freezes. After fixing it by wiping out my PC, doing a fresh start, and getting rid of all those messy files that were blocking things up, the freezing stopped for now. I even had some internet problems before because there was junk on my system, but since then everything is much smoother and I don't get those glitches anymore.
You have FIOS so it's probably a DNS or DHCP problem, likely with your G3100 router. Those routers often have bugs in their built-in software that need fixing from the ISP. Try clearing your Windows cache and restarting both the DNS and DHCP services. You can also change your router settings to fix this, but be careful because it's very basic. The fastest way right now is just setting a public DNS like Google's (8.8.8.8) in Windows instead of using your local server. If you want privacy, look for free servers online too. Maybe the fresh install made things worse by rebuilding the cache. To change the DNS: Press Win + R to open Run, type ncpa.cpl and press Enter. Right click on your Ethernet connection (or the one connected to FIOS) and choose Properties. Go to the tab labeled IPv4 and click "Use the following DNS server..." under Preferred. Type in 8.8.8.8 for that box. Under Alternate, type 8.8.4.4. Then click OK to finish.
