The connection is slow and unreliable, especially in your room. We installed a network extender, but it seems our router might be outdated. We have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 and an AT&T modem we received for free—it appears to be old. I’m unsure if the issue is with the router itself or just my computer’s network adapter. Should I replace the modem, router, or get a new network adapter? My computer uses a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 adapter.

What rate are you charging yourself? What performance are you achieving on your PC? Could you connect your PC directly to the router without using Wi-Fi (just a wired link), and notice any changes?

Start by performing several network speed tests—around five should suffice—to determine if your connection is stable or inconsistent. If you notice persistent slowness or interruptions, it may indicate an issue with your modem. Compare the actual performance against the manufacturer's specified speeds.

I know now it’s quite unreliable since my Discord ping will be around 40, but then everyone’s ping jumps to 300 with full red indicators.

We charge for 1000 mbps, yet on my PC everything works smoothly except for gaming and Discord. It feels unstable, like in CSGO—playing for hours without issues but then sudden drops every 30 seconds. I can’t even connect properly because I’m far from the router.

Yes, others are using the same link, which could create problems immediately

Check your wireless speed on your device. Measure the distance between your computer and the main modem or router. Determine the age of your home or apartment building.

Not the usual critic here, but the details are sparse. Share more like this when facing connectivity problems. Payment for internet speed is common—for example, 1000Mb speed available on your device: peak at X Mb. Clarify if it's internal or external—like Discord, usually external downloads. Since you're using an extender, how far is it from your router and the extender from your computer? For clarity, consider switching to access points instead of extenders. They connect directly to your router without boosting the existing signal.
