You're seeking a device that can secure your 1GB connection while maximizing bandwidth usage, at a budget-friendly price. Consider exploring options like Ubiquiti UniFi 5 or similar mesh systems with built-in firewall capabilities. Look into open-source solutions such as pfSense or OpenWRT for a customizable, cost-effective setup. If you prefer hardware, a ruggedized router with advanced QoS and bandwidth management features might suit your needs. Check out affordable 1Gb Ethernet switches or dongles that support multiple connections and firewall features. Keep an eye on deals for used or refurbished gear to stay within budget.

Explore a customized PFSense setup. Acquire refurbished or used government desktops and add-on hardware from any model above the fourth generation—performance will suffice. For brand-new devices, the ideal choice is a device that fits within Ubiquiti’s ecosystem.

Throughput seems unusually low for an EdgeRouter X. Have you turned on hardware offloading? Looked into Ubiquiti forums for possible fixes—they’re quite active and supportive. EDIT: You might try running pfSense or OPNsense on an old PC/server, or opt for a Netgate device if you prefer pfSense. Alternatively, consider Mikrotik, which also shares throughput data on their site. Availability of brands can depend on your location.

The ER-X and ER-X-SFP can manage gigabit WAN connections when hardware offloading is activated. Make sure to upgrade the firmware before proceeding.

Hey everyone, the fix worked perfectly—just a single command in the CLI reduced CPU load and enabled a 960+Mbit download. That saved me a lot of money. Thanks a ton! /allan
