Hey everyone, I’m having some trouble getting my PC to run smoothly. I keep experiencing random freezes. Here’s what my setup looks like: ASUS ROG Strix Z490 E-Gaming i7-10700K NXZT X63 240mm EVGA RTX 2070 SUPER G.Skill 2x8 GB 3600MHz CL 16 Corsair HX850. I’m running at 4.8Ghz with 1.31V LLC3. The freezes happen even when I’m not using anything, but more often during gaming or benchmarking. They usually last about 10 seconds before resuming. After a freeze, the PC makes a specific sound like it just connected a USB drive, and the RGB lights on the motherboard and RAM flicker briefly. My Cinebench R20 score is around 4200, which is low. I’ve swapped out the RAM and tried a different PSU, but nothing changed much. Do you think I might have a faulty CPU? Any advice or suggestions would be super helpful. Ensure everything functions properly before attempting an overclock. Disable the overclock, reset the CPU to default settings, and verify stability first. Note: According to recent sources, the all-core boost for the 10700K is around 4.7, making a manual push to 4.8 unnecessary.
Do not undo the overclock, simply follow what @porina mentioned—this adjustment won’t significantly improve performance.
Thanks for the quick responses! I changed the BIOS to its default configuration. After about five minutes of idle, the system briefly froze for a couple of seconds. All drivers were up to date, and core temperatures stayed around 52°C. I ran Cinebench using the default BIOS settings—this suggests the overclock was off. During the test, the PC froze twice, lasting roughly 5 to 6 seconds each time. The core speed reached 4Ghz, and temperatures climbed to 56°C. The final score came in at 3387 points.
Idle times don't provide much insight. What does it look like under CB20? Continuing to encounter issues at the stock level will make diagnosis harder. Is XMP active? If yes, try turning it off and observe any changes. This is merely a troubleshooting step. The "USB device sound" seems intriguing—suggests hardware might be failing or resetting. The next question is who's responsible? Possible culprits include an SSD or HD drive. If the GPU was involved, you'd typically see a recovery message.
OCCT reported no issues after 10 minutes of testing, even though the computer froze again. Ten minutes of testing with memtest86 showed no errors so far. An unexpected event occurred during startup—while the PC began booting it simply restarted itself. I’ve observed that during normal startup, the mainboard’s small LED lights frequently toggle between red-orange-white and then green. When the PC restarted, the LED stayed stuck on orange.
