Hey there, I understand you're trying to upgrade your old HP Z420 into a home lab server. You're facing some challenges with power connectors, space in the case, noise levels, and wanting to keep your CPU, RAM, and drives. You're thinking about using an existing board that supports the E5-1620 CPU and are considering a CPU swap if needed, all while staying under £400. I’d be happy to share some ideas or suggestions!

It's a V1 CPU, but I didn't include that detail earlier.

v1 relies on X79 boards, high-quality options may cost more. Good luck!

Is the board a non-standard dimension? Might it need a different fit? Collector models from that time command higher prices, but on tighter budgets you can risk a budget-friendly model without brand recognition. The one I received features ECC DDR and standard options. It has a decent number of SATA connections, though only 3Gbps speeds are available, not the full 6Gbps some claim support for. You may also find it doesn’t have all the lanes the processor can actually use. I believe my unit ran at 2x8 from the CPU with the rest handled by the chipset.

Hello, the information shared here matches what I expected. Locating a suitable motherboard for this process seems challenging and costly. After some late-night research, I believe I’ll need to consider a used processor and motherboard. I’m aware this might be a new topic, but no one has any advice on Xeon CPUs for virtualisation. I might have to raise my budget so the purchase can be spread over time. More cores or threads would be ideal, and including Direct IO Virtualisation would be a big plus. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’ll keep researching and post details once I find something reasonable, in case others are interested. Best regards.

Hi Guy and Gals, I've delved deeper into this and understood that upgrading my current setup—currently using 4 x SSD and 2 x HDD for virtualisation testing—would be better with newer hardware. This would provide more upgrade flexibility moving forward. Sorry the previous post wasn't on topic.

Absolutely, I understand—it will likely exceed the initial budget plan (the previous failed Epyc-ly).

I don’t understand your requirements clearly. Could you explain more about the number of drives, storage size, and performance expectations?

You're correct, I'll rephrase it.
