Hey everyone! I messed up installing the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I had a Lenovo Y540 i5-9300H with an RTX 2060, measured my temps around the mid-90s. I was planning to undervolt and downloaded the software, but after doing some adjustments, I didn’t see any results. Instead of my custom settings (which I’ll show you if you want), the defaults took over—specifically Turbo Boost Power Max at 70,000W and Turbo Boost Short Power Max at 107,000W. I’m confused and don’t know what to do now. If you have any ideas, please help me out! Thanks for your time.

The issue arises after installing Intel XTU; instead of the expected 78.00W and 60.00W, you're seeing 107.00W and 70.00W. This happens because the software changes your default settings. To fix this, you need to revert them back to 78.00W and 60.00W and save the changes, otherwise the system will automatically apply the new defaults after a reboot.

It's still covered under warranty, but you're wondering if you can adjust the default power settings (78.00W and 60.00W) using BIOS, since you can't locate power management options there.

In the TPL window, you can see your long and short turbo power limits. Adjust them there to your preferred settings, then restart and verify with HWiNFO. ThrottleStop is recommended for undervolting, as it provides consistent voltage adjustments. Many users start with Intel XTU since it’s developed by Intel, but they often switch to ThrottleStop due to reliability issues. Different Lenovo power profiles can also alter your TDP values.

I did that... reinstalling Windows would wipe all these settings. I’ll never have them saved as defaults again. What harm could those new defaults cause to my CPU? I’m really confused. I should probably avoid Intel XTU from the start. That’s a bad idea. EDIT: Why does it show as 'UNLOCKED' in HWiNFO after those changes? Any suggestions?

If you add Lenovo Vantage, those values will vanish and you’ll see three different settings depending on your thermal mode. My recommendation? Don’t install Lenovo Vantage or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. To revert, I reinstalled Windows, restarted BIOS, and turned off Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework. No Lenovo Vantage installed. I’m fine now, thanks for your help! [i e] edits out!

You can reboot the BIOS and restart Windows simultaneously by pressing the appropriate key during startup, such as F12 or Del when the BIOS menu appears. This will allow you to perform both actions at once. On HP Omen, check the BIOS settings for similar options.
