Hello, you're considering upgrading your setup with an MSI Z77A-GD55 board. You have a GTX 1060 with 3GB of non-ECC RAM and 16GB of DDR3 memory. You're weighing between a used Xeon E3-1270 v2 and an i7 3770, both priced differently. You're unsure which fits your needs better, especially since both seem similar in theory. You're thinking about whether a server CPU is worth the extra $40, given your main use for gaming. The Xeon appears to be a solid option, but you're curious about the downsides of using a server CPU for everyday gaming tasks.

I would use the 22nm 3700 process.

The Xeon lacks both an integrated GPU and the option to boost its core clock multiplier by another factor of four. The speed gap won’t be substantial, so is an iGPU necessary if you decide to remove the graphics card and replace it?

Thanks for the reply. It seems unlikely I'll ever need an IGPU. I won't be selling the GPU.
