I’d choose the 3600 since recent titles such as Red Dead require more cores and threads.

Understood. If you're using 1440p or higher, expect GPU limitations but at 144Hz or above you might hit CPU constraints; 3600 is a better choice since it's more affordable and easier to overclock. The 9600K also lacks a cooler, so its cost should be considered alongside that factor.

Rainbow six performs nicely with numerous threads, while red dead faced issues with excessive refresh rates on CPUs such as i7 9700K and i5 9600K at lower thread counts.
