Hello, I recently purchased the 2024 ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (UX3405MA). All updates are current, and I’ve installed only a few programs; most of my usage is for work. There are no unnecessary files. I opened a browser with several tabs and started downloading a 60GB file. My CPU temperature is between 95-100°C – that’s unusual. My battery is set to the best performance mode, but is that typical? I also noticed ntoskrnl.exe frequently uses around 30% or more CPU. Is that normal? I’ve heard Intel CPUs can overheat easily, but reaching such high temps from a simple download and browser session seems odd. After running diagnostics, everything appears fine, yet the temperatures remain high. I tried various tools and still got no errors, but performance feels sluggish. My RAM is 7467MHz, yet I sometimes see 1-2 second delays when launching or closing apps. This is disappointing. Comparing to my friend’s experience, it seems the new CPU might be struggling with the chassis or drivers aren’t optimal. With 3200MHz RAM and a Ryzen 2700X, I expected smoother operation, especially since I have multiple tabs open. If I switch to balanced or power-saving mode, the temps should drop. Right now, using Best Performance mode causes the CPU to hit 100°C even for light tasks, and the fans run at full speed. It seems my laptop might need better cooling or updated drivers to handle such loads.
Intel chips, particularly the latest models, tend to overheat easily. It could also indicate an issue with your cooling setup. Keep track of the power consumption and clock speeds you're experiencing. Regarding the ntoskrnl process, I often see it running continuously or getting stuck in a loop. When it begins, the system process (ntoskrnl.exe) locks a significant portion of my CPU threads for a while before it stops. Afterward, I typically restart the PC and the problem resolves itself.
The Zenbooks especially the newer slim ones have had temperature issues recently. The cooling is suboptimal for some of the CPUs they have decided to put into them, however, it reaching 95c to 100c just downloading a file is a little bit off of even compared to the others, there could be a defect or issue with the cooling on it. If it was a recent purchase I'd return it and exchange it for a replacement.
I noticed you're using the AMD Ryzen 7 2022-23 model and it's heating up. Don't expect it to stay cool at 100°C while downloading files—this is likely due to a misstep. You might need to replace the thermal paste or consider returning it. For normal use, temperatures will stay in the 50s to 60s range during downloads. With regular tasks like video editing, you'll still hit 90-100°C, so I suggest adjusting the voltage or clock speed. Most laptops can handle this without issues unless they're extremely powerful. If you're okay with it, lower the processor speed to around 99% in power settings for better cooling. Just accept that peak performance isn't guaranteed, unless you're using a high-end model like the 5th Gen Clevo.
again, from the screenshot you showed, I used Mozilla with three tabs, downloaded a 69GB file, and noticed high temperatures. The system task was using about 26% CPU, and the fans were spinning at 5000 RPM. I’ll forward it to support for a check. If they confirm everything is fine, I’ll stick with balanced or power-saving mode or lower the clock speed.
