I considered switching to an i3, thinking it would save me money—around $50 less. I’m not sure AMD is offering anything in that price range right now.

They're adopting new architecture cores beyond Skylake for the first time in mainstream desktops, which should lead to a significant boost in performance. The improvements are expected to be substantial, though we're still figuring out the exact impact compared to Zen 2 and Zen 3. Intel seems focused on refining clock speeds rather than changing the core approach, but the results are unclear. Process enhancements have caused some issues, keeping 14nm development active. Benchmarking data suggests most people wouldn't expect such high gains at lower resolutions, and purchasing a top-tier CPU just for basic gaming is unlikely. Raising graphics settings narrows the performance gap, but it won't match raw CPU power in most scenarios. It's worth noting that FPS drops appear to be less affected by the changes, indicating some stability in performance.
