You’re unsure about the purpose of updating. The key is understanding what the machine is meant for. Reflections on memory needs reveal something important—this requirement points to a specific need. I’m not sure, but you seem to be looking for more memory. Expecting extra RAM will likely cost as much as the CPU itself. There’s probably a solid reason behind it. If you’re targeting 256 GB, chances are you’ll need more than that. Today’s technology can handle this. Significant investment is necessary. Why would anyone want to change anything, especially not AMD? The point is, you have a massive old processor with no real reason to upgrade—just higher power consumption and cost. You could theoretically go multi-threaded or even overclock, but that would demand a lot more than you need right now. The only practical use for extra memory would be for workstation tasks, which may require specific GPU capabilities. The only AMD option worth considering is the Radeon VII, but even then it’s mainly about getting 16 GB of RAM affordably, which might not align with your goals.

I work with enterprise software development and manage several VMs simultaneously. Occasionally I edit videos and play games. I build software and rely on databases across multiple projects at once. My current motherboard only has 24GB RAM, which is why upgrading is necessary and feels outdated.

Not exactly 125gb? Well, maybe it could be. I actually managed to get 125gb from it. That really shows AMD offers better value for money. Their performance isn’t as fast, but it’s more affordable per core—about 20 to 40% cheaper.
