The 9900K is technically slightly better for gaming. It edges out the 3950X by a few frames in most titles, but this is barely noticeable. However there are a few more things to consider: 1. The 3950X will likely have a longer life, since games and apps will become more heavily multithreaded (although both 9900K and 3950X have enough threads to live a long time 2. Intel 10th Gen CPUs are coming out soon, you may want to wait for the 10900K which will be on a different motherboard 3. Why do you need such powerful CPUs anyway? Get a 3700X, there's no significant gaming difference between the 3700X and 3950X and it's way cheaper.
When you need to purchase now, go for the 3700X or 3900X. If you have time, consider the 4700X or 4900X. The 9900K isn't worth it. The socket is outdated, the platform worn out, and power, heat, and security concerns make the i9 less appealing compared to better Ryzen alternatives.
Technically, the 9900k performs better in gaming compared to the 3950x. If the goal is simply the top CPU for gaming, the 9900k is the choice. Regarding power consumption, the 3950x consumes more power, resulting in higher heat generation.
I wasn't claiming the 9900k was superior, only that it offers better performance for gaming. In my view, a 3950x makes more sense. Regarding power consumption, I assumed higher power usage means more heat generation? But if energy isn’t being converted to heat, where does it go? A chiplet architecture seems logical because it would simplify cooling since heat isn’t focused in one area, though overall heat output would still increase.
