I looked up the Intel b560 chipset. It supports 12 lanes. Based on your setup, you're considering different PCIe configurations—some slots use 4 lanes, others 2. The question is about how the 12 lanes are arranged and whether any lanes remain unused in a typical M.2 configuration.

Intel chips come with many frustrating restrictions... AMD boards typically offer over 20 lanes, even on the B450 model.

That's a disgrace for Intel.

The chipset listed features 12 PCIe lanes, while the intended CPU offers 20 lanes. Combined they total 32 lanes. AMD Ryzen processors provide 20 lanes, and AM4 boards can range from PCIe 2.0 x4 to PCIe 4.0 x16 based on selection. This makes them similar in capability.

Chipset and CPU lanes are different concepts. The B560 chipset was designed for Rocket Lake processors, which offer 20 CPU lanes similar to AMD CPUs. While Ryzen has 24 theoretical CPU lanes, only 4 are accessible to users, so manufacturers count them higher to appear more competitive. These extra lanes connect to AMD's chipset, whereas Intel uses a separate dedicated link. In modern consumer CPUs, you usually get 1x4 for M.2 slots and at least 1x16, which can be split into 2x8 on larger systems. Any remaining capacity depends on the chipset provided.
