Intel and PCI Gen 3
Intel and PCI Gen 3
Hey everyone, I'm planning to upgrade my PC with these specs—i7-4790K GTX 980 and 16GB RAM. I want an i5-10600K build paired with a RTX 3080. I'm worried that using LGA1200 boards won't support PCI Gen 4, which might hurt the performance of my new GPU. Since I mostly play games on this machine, I don’t mind switching to AMD. What do you think about the potential impact?
PCI Gen 4 is unlikely to bring significant gains over PCI Gen 3. GamersNexus discussed the comparison between PCI Gen 3 x8 and x16 in games, noting minimal performance changes.
besides needing confirmation it will work, there could be minor GPU-related differences even in limited scenarios like 5700xt, possibly pointing toward PCIe 4.0 adoption. Predicting its impact on next-gen tech is uncertain, but it seems likely to have only a small effect. It might make sense to wait and maximize what you have from your current CPU until we see tangible performance gains elsewhere, rather than rushing for more Skylake cores or AMD trying to catch up.
