Intel 8700k becomes noticeably warmer than other models
My i7 8700k runs smoothly with LM and has been stable at 5.2 GHz 1.38v, maintaining temperatures up to 65°C while scoring around 1670 on Cinebench R15 for over a year. Recently I performed a temperature check using realtemp and Coretemp (after watching a YouTube tutorial). During Cinebench R15 runs, core 3 spiked to 100°C while the others stayed at 65°C or lower, causing the system to lock up and requiring a forced shutdown. After cleaning and reapplying thermal paste, the issue persisted. The sudden spike in core 3 temperature occurs instantly when I start Cinebench, before fans can warm up, suggesting rapid heat buildup inside the package. I then replaced the cooler with a Noctua NH-D15, but temperatures remained unchanged. My cooling setup is adequate overall, yet core 3 consistently runs hotter than others. After updating BIOS, no improvement was seen. Experimenting with overclock settings revealed that increasing voltage on the vcore raises core 3 temps, while others stay stable. I’m puzzled why core 3 seems to get more voltage than the rest. Could LM move positions on the die? Do sensors fail randomly? Is TIM degradation normal? If nothing else works, I’ll delid and reinstall the LM, or risk further failure. Any advice would be appreciated.
I've experienced issues before with repasting after delid, especially when temperatures rose unexpectedly after months. This has happened with regular paste, not with LM. The systems using LM have remained stable over time. If a core becomes too hot, I'd suspect a problem and prioritize addressing it under the IHS rather than trying to fix it elsewhere. Uneven cooler mounting could be a factor, though the noctua system performs well in that regard.

Didn’t see anything similar on my older chip. Just tested the 8700k a few days back. Probably missed checking all the cores, maybe I should. I’d definitely disassemble it and inspect it. It shouldn’t be that hot without the delid, so something must have changed. I wouldn’t jump to sensor conclusions unless the idle margin stayed the same.
I had to lower my overclock to 5.1ghz just to maintain stability. It's really annoying not being able to determine the reason behind the performance drop.
It seems like the issue isn't always obvious. I've heard stories about RAM causing hotspots on specific cores due to CPU memory controllers. Changing the power supply also helped in one situation. It's odd how these problems can pop up unexpectedly. #isolationtesting #suchislife
