It seems the drive already contains a partition labeled C. When you create another partition using unused space in the installer, it changes to D. Windows then installs itself onto that new partition. I'm not sure if this method still works on systems newer than XP.

It seems unlikely Windows 10 needs a single partition installed. Perhaps the setup includes an option to adjust the installation process.
