installing openSUSE on an HP ProLiant ML370 G4 device
I've been moving my machines from Debian to OpenSUSE because of the capabilities offered by the latter. But one server still runs Debian—it won't boot anything else. Getting Debian to install was already a challenge. When I try to launch the OpenSUSE installer, it brings up GRUB, lets me pick the install path, waits what feels like forever for the kernel to load, and then the system freezes when the loading bar reaches its limit. It's important to note that the Debian version I have is for i386, while the OpenSUSE version I'm attempting to install is for i586. If anyone has any insights, please let me know. Thanks ahead. ~Breadpudding
Now, my first instinct would be to suggest the same workaround as is needed to boot my laptop in Linux, "iommu=soft". However, I'm not sure if such an old server even has IOMMU, so please do share the specifications of your troublesome server. My guess would be that the motherboard is acting up. To see where the LiveUSB (DVD maybe?) falls flat on its face, remove the "quiet" and "splash" boot parameters to see more than just a loading bar. Enjoy your day!
