He uses this regularly, but struggles mainly during downloads and gaming together. The loading times are a bit slower, though overall it’s a really good option.

It shouldn't be too bad; just slower load times. Whether it impacts your gameplay isn't a concern—your hardware should handle it fine. If you ever have extra cash, consider the WD Blue (internal) 1TB drive for gaming. Right now I use an SSD for my operating system and store large video files on a 500GB drive.

In theory USB 3.0 offers faster speeds than USB 2.0, but real-world performance often falls short of expectations. This means loading times might be slightly slower, though it won’t stop them entirely.

I believe since it's not a tough game, it's okay to try playing Dota 2 from an external hard drive. It functions really smoothly too.

My games are set up on separate external drives. I compared them to the main OS drive and observed significant delays, particularly with titles such as Star Citizen, Skyrim, and Assassin's Creed.
