You recently purchased an 8GB RAM module from Kingston. Your laptop has two RAM slots, but one appears inactive. You considered replacing your existing 4GB stick with a new 8GB one. After installation, Task Manager reports only 4GB of RAM available. Could a faulty CPU be responsible for this issue? You mentioned installing just one 8GB stick and have heard about cases where a damaged CPU prevents the system from recognizing additional RAM, even though you've already returned the faulty module. Your current machine is a Dell Inspiron 3521.

The mobile drivers are current. My computer can handle up to 16GB with 8GB per port. I’m not exceeding the supported limit. It runs DDR3 and uses DDR3L memory. I’ve been told it’s possible to fit DDR3L in a DDR3 slot.

I'm using a mobile device, so I can't check your laptop directly. However, it might be limited by BIOS for anything over 4GB. If you had a faulty memory controller, you probably couldn't even POST without swapping the DIMM slots, though that's not certain.

I didn’t search properly. I have a BIOS update ready. My laptop uses A12, while Dell’s is A16. Some users reported issues after updating BIOS, so I’m cautious about it. I’d appreciate hearing from someone who faced a similar situation and had it resolved with an update.

Dell is a reputable company so I would not worry. Your laptop just does not lose electricity while updating
