I've been exploring different opinions about where to place software on my system. Some suggest installing Davinci Resolve only on the boot drive, which is the standard setting. Others warn against placing it elsewhere, claiming it's better to keep it on the primary drive. Personally, I believe Microsoft simplified installation to help users who struggle with basic tasks find their programs more easily. Let's consider the pros of keeping everything on the boot drive versus distributing it across multiple drives.

My software is distributed across three storage devices. The 128GB Boot drive holds only small applications I use frequently. The biggest folder I store is MS Office. In reality, it exists mainly because Office 365 restricts changing the installation location. My 800GB collection of games, software, and files is stored on a 1.05TB SSD. I also have an 8TB HDD for large virtual machines and long-term backups.

Beyond SSD versus HDD loading speeds this aspect is irrelevant. All programs will generate settings or cache files to start or boot the OS drive, regardless of location such as Users/Documents or Users/AppData.

All programs? Probably not. You can adjust settings, and caches or temporary files can be saved in any location you prefer. They should ideally be stored on a fast SSD or NVME drive.

Essentially, the operating system doesn't matter if the software is installed somewhere.
