I recently attempted to set up a printer for my elderly neighbour's new laptop. I repeatedly tried installing the drivers but they wouldn't work. Microsoft kept redirecting me to their app store. I would open the Canon app and be prompted to download drivers, which would then take me back to the app store asking for changes. It suggested updating settings without guiding me to the right place. Only after confirming the Windows version did I discover it was running in S mode. After a quick search, I learned how to switch it out of S mode, but there was a strong warning about leaving it that way to risk security. Once I switched it off, the printer installation succeeded. It seems Microsoft is pushing for specific apps and features, similar to Apple's approach. Edited January 23, 2024 by Masterjack spelling

S mode compels you to rely on the Microsoft Store. It's typically applied on machines with limited capabilities that avoid running the complete Windows, contributing to electronic waste.

Windows S is Windows Home, only secured. It represents a specific version of Homs. There’s no price variation for users, though it tends to be set on more affordable models.
