Hey everyone, I'm on a Windows 7 laptop and feeling a bit stuck. I'm thinking about dual booting and trying Windows 8.1 as a test. I already have a VM running Windows 8.1, but it's really slow and I can't allocate full resources to it. I need to set up both OSes side by side using the Windows 7 Boot Manager, since I've got a VHD with Windows 8.1 installed. I used EasyBCD to create a boot option for Windows 8.1, but when I try to boot from it, the system says it can't start properly and shows an error about a different file signature. I understand what's happening, but I'm curious if it's possible to configure this setup with the Windows 7 Boot Manager. My main concern is keeping everything stable—so I don’t want to risk damaging my system or partitions. I’d really like to use a VHD for Windows 8.1 and avoid messing up my drive layout. Thanks!

Yes, you can simply install Windows 8 on a dedicated partition.

But I think I might have issues with the drive, I don’t have much free space, there’s a VHD file already on Win8.1, and putting it on a separate partition will force it to use the Windows 8.1 bootloader (bootmgr), which is the problem, because I sometimes mess up the bootmgr during installation of new operating systems.
