Install Windows 10 on two drives simultaneously.
Install Windows 10 on two drives simultaneously.
Hello everyone. (Some of these ideas might fit better in a troubleshooting section.) Over the past year and a half, I've been using a dual-boot configuration with Win 10. My system has two 500GB SSDs—one internal for work and another connected via SATA 6Gbps dock for gaming. This setup helps me stay focused while working; the gaming drive is kept separate.
Initially, I installed Windows 10 on one SSD normally, set it up to a stable state, then cloned the drive and chose the desired boot device. It worked well for over a year. However, recently the internal SSD (the work drive) has been experiencing frequent errors. Whenever I tried to load the gaming drive, it would report issues needing repair, and my next attempt to boot into Windows either failed or triggered a chkdsk scan before launching. Now the work drive won’t even start Windows. Instead, it displays spinning indicators of Windows loading but never progresses.
I’ve run diagnostics in various apps and confirmed the drive is healthy. I can transfer all my data from the gaming drive, which still functions perfectly. This means I’m prepared to reinstall Windows if needed. My main concern is how to manage two separate Windows 10 installations on different drives without conflicts.
Could you share any methods or tips for running dual Windows 10 setups more smoothly? Thanks for your assistance!
I run a dual boot setup with 8.1 on one SSD and 10 on another in my laptop. To start the system, I just press the ESC key repeatedly when turning it on to open the boot menu and select the right drive. However, the laptop’s SATA controller is failing, causing errors during some boots. I also notice a solid hard drive activity light appearing intermittently, which usually appears when I encounter boot issues. My suggestion is to test another SATA port inside the machine and possibly replace the SATA cable used with the internal drive. This worked for a drive on another desktop we used.
