Install the Pixma MP250 driver for your Linux distribution.
Set up your old Pixma MP250 as an independent network scanner using a minimal distro. You've installed Arch and configured SaneD, but the scanner feature isn't working. I've checked scangearmp in the AUR, though it relies on certain packages that are either 32-bit or no longer maintained. Is there another approach to connect with this scanner without modifying it extensively? You mentioned using it solely for scanning, not printing.
Take part in the "community driver printer/scanner management" challenge, also known as swapping your device for something compatible with the OS you plan to use. Alternatively, reach out to Canon to request drivers for platforms other than Windows or MacOS. While I acknowledge it might not be feasible, my extensive experience across multiple operating systems and IT consulting has led me to abandon this task as it doesn't justify the effort.
Could it make sense to disassemble the device and craft a custom connection between the CCD sensor and USB? I’m trying to steer clear of the Dr. Frankenstein method, but if a replacement is necessary, I won’t throw away useful components from the old unit.
Sure, I wouldn't attempt that, though you might succeed. If it were a scanner alone, generic TWAIN drivers could work better, but since it combines printer and scanner features, I question if the scanning chip functions independently of the printing part.
I lost interest today and dismantled it. The situation is clear—they use a custom ASIC from China for USB handling and printer communication. Without the pin layout online, connecting via their board is out of reach. I’ll have to disassemble the scanner and look for a way to talk to it without the board. It sounds like an interesting challenge, but I’m running out of time. Sadly, I can’t afford a scanner under CAD$40 that works well with Linux. Maybe I’ll settle for a digital camera instead.
