Install the operating system from an external drive during setup.
Preparing to assist a friend with his first PC build, he prefers not to use a DVD ROM, so I’m offering to lend him my external DVD drive for installing Windows. Since I’ve never used an external DVD drive before—especially not for OS installation—I’m curious if this is feasible. The drive connects via two USB ports: one for the PC to identify it and another for additional power when needed. Should the BIOS recognize it as a DVD drive that can be booted to begin the setup, or would we need a physical DVD? Thanks in advance! ❤️
It needs to be recognized as a bootable USB device or a CD/DVD storage option.
You need Windows 8 Enterprise to set it up on an external HDD. Earlier versions worked, but now they charge an extra $250.
