Inquiries on SSDs and M.2/NVMe technology.
I have a Dell 7490 laptop with a Samsung PM871b M.2 256GB drive. I’m thinking about adding more storage. I could buy a 970 Evo Plus 500GB for $85, but since the laptop is still under warranty, I assume it would cost more if I went outside that. I might opt for a Dell-branded NVMe or M.2 drive and have it covered by the warranty. This is what Dell suggested. My main concerns are whether NVMe will actually be faster than M.2 drives in everyday tasks. My current Samsung model delivers about 540Mb/s read and 520Mb/s write speeds. While a tech enthusiast might prefer the higher speed, for regular use it probably won’t make a big difference. I’d likely choose a M.2 drive with around 1TB within my budget. Would it be worth getting something Dell-branded if it stays under warranty, or should I go for the 970 Evo Plus instead? I still have three years of ProSupport coverage left.
