Recently Windows has been offering free upgrades to Windows 10 along with a DirectX 12 update. I understand it's still new and some programs or games might face compatibility problems (only in rare instances). My questions are: 1.) Are Windows 7 and 8.1 compatible with DirectX 12? 2.) If I switched from Windows 10 back to Windows 8.1, does my current Windows version remain valid? After installing Windows 10, I accidentally removed files from my old OS using CCleaner. I still have the installation CD for Windows 8.1. 3.) Windows 10 is free for Windows 7 as well. My laptop is four years old now, and I’m curious whether upgrading to Windows 10 will significantly improve performance or just cause some issues? (Cortana isn’t available in my area.) My specs are: CPU – Intel Core i7 2670QM @ 2.20 GHz; RAM – 8 GB; HDD – Toshiba 750 GB; GPU – GeForce GT 540M 2 GB. Thanks in advance.

1.) Only W10 is compatible with DX12.
2.) It remains a valid option.
3.) I haven’t observed significant performance variations between W10 and W7.

1. No 2. Yes 3. It varies. Some systems start up quicker, others might not. Windows 8 and 10 usually launch faster. Speed improvements are often minor. The main benefit comes from newer features rather than raw performance.

Windows 7 and 8 lack DX12 compatibility, yet they will accommodate Vulkan, which provides comparable low-level communication between software drivers and hardware to boost performance. It will be intriguing to observe the extent of games using DX12 versus those utilizing Vulkan: Valve’s DirectX 12 seems impractical, while Vulkan offers broader future potential across Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Linux.

Valve definitely backs Vulkan over DX12, regardless of performance considerations. Supporting Vulkan on Linux would be a big win for them. It’s not surprising they favor this direction, especially since GabeN has strong feelings against Windows. Even if DX12 outperforms Vulkan, Valve would still choose to support Vulkan.
