It varies by key—checks if it's OEM or retail and whether it links to a Microsoft account.

They mentioned connecting the key before reinstalling, which should simplify things. I initially thought logging in after the new install would activate it, but that's not how it works. The link provided looks reliable, though I'm unsure about the current patch version needed.

You have a retail Win10 Pro setup tied to your Microsoft account. You need to move the activation key from the old machine to the new one after it’s installed and ready. Since the key will be used on both installations temporarily, you should ensure the process is smooth without shutting down the old system until everything is confirmed.

Wait before enabling the new feature. You still get a full 30-day trial, and as mentioned often, you only lose a few things while completing the setup.

Previously, I always set up new workstations using the latest Windows release. Last year I upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10 due to Adobe photo app requirements. I haven’t had to move a license before. Now that my PC is a Z97 model, I’ll have to install Windows from scratch.

This process of disabling a key is different now. I assumed it would move automatically when logging in on a new system, but it didn’t work that way.

When it comes to laptops and similar devices, the lock is usually on the first motherboard. Results can vary a lot.
