First time startup Asus ranger VIII with i7 6700K shows CPU temp at 89 degrees celsius. I have not installed anything, just browsing around in bios. No external CPU fan installed, using a CM trooper cabinet with default fans. Is this normal?

The likelihood is your CPU will be fine, just ensure the cooler is installed properly before restarting.

You need a cooler for the CPU that the processor doesn't include, and it's important you don't restart the PC without one.

Thank you for your response. I was informed by the retailer that no extra cooler is needed for my setup, and the PC has been running for about 20 minutes. Is there any chance the CPU might have suffered damage?

I recently assembled a new PC with a 6700K and paired it with a Corsair H110i GTX cooler. The SATA cable for the pump and fans wasn’t connected correctly (that’s a common oversight!). When I powered on the system, no errors appeared even though the pump and fans weren’t running.
While configuring BIOS, I observed my CPU reaching 98°C. I immediately powered down the machine. It had been running for about five minutes. I checked the thermal paste for any signs of melting or leakage, and everything was fine.
After reapplying the paste and reconnecting the SATA power to the cooler, I monitored the CPU temperatures. They remained around 19°C during idle, matching the room temperature.
After several weeks of regular use and even light overclocking, temperatures stayed low as expected. (Phew 😄)
It’s worth noting that Intel doesn’t provide a dedicated CPU heatsink or fan for K-series models intended for overclocking; a stock cooler won’t suffice.

Thank you for your kind words. I placed the Intel TS13X liquid cooler order today and think it will be adequate.

That's really surprising they told you not to need a CPU cooler. That seems completely unreasonable. It looks like either the manufacturer didn't include one or they're not paying attention. You should definitely install a cooler for that processor—your temperatures will stabilize properly. Nice for taking the time to double-check before it's too late.
