Initial OC (5960x) - suitable temperatures
Initial OC (5960x) - suitable temperatures
Hi!
I'm starting my first overclock on my 5960x.
System details:
CPU: Intel i7 5960x
CPU cooler: CoolerMaster Nepton 280L
Memory: Asus X99-Pro
GPU: GTX 980Ti
RAM: Corsair Vengeance (8x8gb) 64gb 2133Mhz (XMP set to 2400Mhz at 64GB)
Current results:
Running Prime95:
Package Max: 77 C
Core Max: 54 - 61 C (most cores near 57 C, two cores slightly higher at 60/61 C)
Idle package temp is 40 C and idle core temp is 20 C.
I'm unsure if these values are safe. Should I try pushing it higher or should I reduce the target? I've read about recommended temperatures but haven't found clear guidance. The speed seems fixed at 4.2GHz no matter what I do, unlike before when it varied more. Is this typical?
Thanks!
Those temperatures are quite high! I prefer keeping the CPU below 80°C during heavy use, though this is just a common guideline and the exact limit can differ between different CPUs.

Oh okay that's good. I haven't quite tested how far I can push that voltage down before it becomes unstable either.
One thing I noticed was that some people are increasing the bus strap to 1.25 and then one had a multiple of 38 for a total of 4.75GHz (I know I won't be able to reach that with my cooling) but is that something I should look into trying as well? Like why do that over 47 x 100 for example
I guess the other thing to mention is it's the middle of summer and the days here can get to 45 C lol. It's not too bad in the room I'm in, but definitely not cool.
EDIT:
I've just tried doing an oc of 1.2v 1.25 x 33 (4.125GHz) and increasing RAM to 3000MHz.
Running Prime95 the temps were:
Package Max: 86C (appeared to be still slowly rising)
Core Max: 61 - 72 (screw you core 4
🙁
)
So this seems to be past the limits of my cooler I guess, unless this is still acceptable.
