I recently assembled a new gaming PC and am trying Windows 8.1 x64 for the first time. I have some background on Windows 7 and a few questions about this new system. Would anyone be able to assist with any of these? Could there be a method to open apps like mail or calculator in a non-full-screen window? I’ve configured my Hotmail account correctly, but I’m only sending emails from them and not receiving from others. I’m also unsure how to skip the login screen and jump straight to the desktop. My overall feeling is that Windows 8.1 feels similar to Windows 7, especially with the start menu. Thanks for your help!

1. Third-party solutions can assist with these tasks.
2. I don't rely on the Mail app, that's okay.
3. The classic startup option may launch directly to the desktop.

Oops, it seems there was an issue. Try clicking Run Netplwiz, then deselect the item and click OK.

It should work out of the box. Just ensure a password is defined or there are separate user accounts.
