Good evening everyone! I'm hearing this weird sound sometimes, like a squeaky gear grinding up and down. It comes from my PC whether it's a desktop or a gaming rig. It happens about three to four times every minute but stops on its own. The video shows the noise right at the 3-4 second mark. Here is what I tried doing: running Windows 11 Pro with the latest updates, using a 9800x3d CPU at stock speeds without overclocking or undervolt, and an RTX 5070 Ti Overclocked (which had just a tiny bit of undervolt) on my motherboard. I also have an MSI PRO X870-P WiFi mobo with a Cooler Master Masterliquid Atmos II 360mm fan, Lian Li Lancool 216 RGB case, and a Western Digital 2 TB NVMe drive. This exact problem happened before when I used the same CPU but a different 5070 Ti on an MSI PRO B650-P WiFi mobo instead of my Pro X870-P WiFi one. Any tips or help would be super helpful! Thanks so much everyone in advance

You might need to change your power supply unit, which means using an inductor instead of just one wire loop for better connection.

It might be a fan's fault. You could probably skip checking it and not worry about anything breaking if you do. But if you find out exactly which one is causing the problem, then you just need to swap that specific part out.

It feels weird because I had this exact noise in my old build with different fans on, same brand but different coolers (Atmos 240mm vs 360mm). Can't be anything else right? I've had coil whine before, and I know it's not that loud or consistent buzzing sound. This one comes on and off for a quick second about once every minute. If it were coil whine from the VRMs or power supply, I would hear constant noise all the time. Since nothing is happening there yet, this probably isn't coil whine either. Also, my PC was brand new yesterday and didn't show these strange noises until today! Thanks for asking!

Could it be a hard drive too, maybe one that's turning around and stopping in between?

I'm using the exact same power supply unit as before, even though it's new. This setup uses just one 2TB NVMe drive. It runs Windows 11 Pro with all recent updates. The CPU is a stock 9800X3D running at default speeds without any overclocking or undervolt adjustments. I have an overclocked RTX 5070 Ti from PNY, though the slight undervolt caused some noise that sounded just like it did on the original build. My motherboard is an MSI PRO X870-P WiFi, and for cooling I have a Cooler Master Masterliquid Atmos II 360mm fan from Lian Li along with Lancool 216 TG ATX RGB fans. The PSU has 750W power spec, while my memory is 32 GB (two sticks of 16GB) running at 6000 MT/s with a low CL 32 latency.

It could be that something inside the case is making the noise on its own, like a tiny thing vibrating at certain fan speeds.

It can happen. I often see this right after the computer turns off completely. Sometimes just the fans spin slowly, sometimes all at once with different speeds. I don't know what causes it, but it makes my head spin because I get really sensitive to loud high-pitched noises lol
