Looking at the options, I'm considering upgrading to 32GB or 48GB RAM. I haven't really seen systems with 48GB before, but the matching kit is priced about $45 more than the 16GB version. Local stores don’t carry the used market version. Right now I’m using around half my memory for multitasking on YouTube and browsing. For gaming, I usually switch between a YouTube stream and a game, hitting near 90% RAM usage. Chrome is particularly demanding. If you had your setup in mind, would you choose 32GB for better performance or stick with 16GB and save the extra? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

You're currently using two 8GB modules, which suggests they're likely single-rank. It wouldn't be wise to mix single-rank and dual-rank memory; most modern 16GB sticks (or bigger) are dual-rank. You can either keep the existing RAM or swap everything out for new. This is mainly about ensuring compatibility.

It seems there are a lot of misunderstandings here. 2x8GB is likely a single-rank configuration; dual-rank 8GB DIMMs are rare, but 16GB DIMMs are now mostly single-rank and have been for at least two to three years. Memory ICs for 16GB have become affordable enough that producing single-rank memory is cheaper than dual-rank. The exception is certain B die types like the 3600 CL14, which are guaranteed dual-rank because Samsung’s only 8GB version is 3600 CL14. That means to make 16GB DIMMs, manufacturers typically use dual-rank chips. Mixing single-rank and dual-rank memory isn’t inherently problematic—it can actually work well. It puts extra strain on the memory controller, but modern boards and CPUs usually handle it fine. The main issue comes from combining different memory ICs, which is a separate concern. Having both a single-rank 2x8GB and a dual-rank 2x16GB in one system increases the chance of compatibility, though not certainty. Just because kits share the same model number doesn’t mean they’ll be identical—different vendors often choose different ICs for each kit. Unless you’re purchasing a very specialized high-end unit, it’s usually just a matter of luck which memory IC ends up in your system. For optimal compatibility, it’s best to replace all RAM with fresh units rather than relying on the same ones again.

Thanks for the details. If you're swapping out everything that expands your options, you're on the right track. Just confirmed your sticks are single-rank.
