The QVL lists are quite old. On my current CPU, I can handle up to 2400 MHz without issues, whereas the previous specs were limited to 2133 MHz. This year I upgraded the RAM, which now supports the newer 3200 MHz. The latest BIOS also works with my older processor, and I installed it recently to prepare for a future CPU upgrade. It also resolved a micro stuttering problem when TPM was active. The Gigabyte BIOS update page is confusing; some changes affect installation sequences and they sometimes drop older updates while keeping others. They also remove certain features to accommodate newer ones. My system details are: Gigabyte GA-AB350 ATX board, EVGA 550W bronze power supply, EVGA GTX 1070 SSC, 2x 8GB team group Vulcan-z with 3200 MHz RAM (clocked at 2400MT/s using default timings), SK Hynix Gold 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, plus two 500GB SATA SSDs in RAID 0 for my Steam library. I also have the RAM model TLZRD416G3200HC16FDC01.
The information could depend on specific board revisions. It seems you're facing issues beyond just BIOS updates; your board might be too new for certain upgrades. As mentioned in a previous post, MSI's support changed after purchasing the CPU, warning that an update could damage older boards. I checked QVL listings but didn't find any entries for B550, X570, or X470 models. This absence doesn't confirm compatibility, but it also doesn't rule it out. The RAM was pulled from my partner’s pre-built system that came with a standard Gigabyte B550 and a Ryzen 5600X. It looks like the motherboard might not be compatible—it's version 1.0, and it got installed shortly after the first-gen Ryzen launch. This could mean Gigabyte misrepresented CPU support since now I’m forced to either send back the CPU or replace my motherboard.
The choice is clear. If this RAM ran on a Gigabyte B550, it could also fit other B550 models. As mentioned before, the absence of QVL doesn't confirm functionality, just leaves room for doubt. This isn't unusual—manufacturers have made similar mistakes with support. MSI has already corrected their claim about the B450M Bazooka supporting 5900X. Still, @SweetSweet, I suggest these options I trust: Asus Tuf Gaming B550M-PLUS m.ATX and Asus Tuf Gaming B550-PLUS ATX. The m.ATX is compatible with several Patriot Viper kits, while the ATX works with the same kits. I prefer double-sided DIMMs over single-sided ones; Ryzen seems to favor them. I believe I’ll need to replace my current motherboard. It seems the Cezanne APUs aren’t compatible, though a 5800X could work if I can find one. My board appears to be nearing its end of life, and I dislike working with Gigabyte—they often push Norton onto users and their support is unreliable. Their quality control is poor, and the issues I’ve faced have been mostly intermittent, likely tied to the hardware itself. It would be great to get a mid-range ASUS board for better performance and features like PCI-E Gen 3 and USB-C.
