Increased storage capacity; device is now disabled and won’t start under typical conditions
System details: R7 3700x installed on an ASUS X470 PRIME board, cooled by an NH-D15 with a Low Noise Adapter. Equipped with a 16GB Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 Vengeance XMP memory kit (matching the earlier one). Powered by a Corsair RM 850x using standard cables. I removed the existing case to fit another 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz "XMP" module, adjusting its position near the CPU socket for easier installation. The nearest slot was tightly constrained by the NH-D15, but all 32GB were successfully seated later. After installing the new memory, I reactivated the power supply and turned on the motherboard. Lights illuminated, I pressed the power button—though it didn’t boot properly. After repositioning the RAM, nothing happened; the system remained unresponsive, fans still disabled, and BIOS stayed locked. I tried connecting a separate power supply for the CPU only (24-pin ATX, GTX 960), but the 3060 couldn’t run as the test PSU lacked support. The machine started but displayed a CPU fan error. After rebooting, I noticed connectivity issues: no Ethernet, and the SpeedFan speed controller failed to show any PWM signals or temperature readings. I attempted multiple RAM configurations—both RTX 3060 and GTX 960—but results were inconsistent. Powered on again, I observed several malfunctions. Overall, I’m uncertain what caused the damage; I’ll consider a BIOS reset and update the version later. I’m relieved nothing critical was destroyed, but it’s a bit concerning.
Observing a trend of Ryzens encountering problems with Corsair RAM, especially crashes. Frequent discussions highlight this combination lately. Strong performance is noted with Crucial Ballistix for Ryzen systems. Updated June 20, 2022 by An0maly_76
Seems like Corsair Memory on a Ryzen setup. The main problem was leaving XMP enabled while upgrading RAM—possibly the device can't handle 3200MHz with four dimming levels. Since it's Corsair, that might be why it fails to boot. Resetting the BIOS could have resolved it, as XMP is usually off by default and works at 2133MHz for any compatible kit. I'm unsure what affected the Windows installation. Clearing the BIOS would help; feel free to update it if you wish, then let me know.
After resetting BIOS on Windows, the system runs at 2133 MHz. SpeedFan isn’t providing much detail, and the Ethernet adapter hasn’t reappeared.
First step was to reset the BIOS. It looks like either the RAM sticks or the board can't reach full 3200 MHz with four sticks, so try lower speeds like 3000, then 2800, etc. Or maybe the RAM is bad—you should run a memtest it. Regarding the Ethernet issue, I've used a new case (B660) and resetting the network in Windows fixed it. The loss of hardware sensors seems unusual.
Hello everyone, Memory is now operating at 3200mhz without any issues. I’m @PDifolco, sorry but resetting the network didn’t help—Windows rebooted itself but when it came back I was still without a connection. The Ethernet port shows one orange light, but there’s no green indicator, which suggests a hardware problem. I’m planning to start the system using my original power supply, which would be perfect!
You're still having trouble getting your system to boot despite using the original power supply. The motherboard lights up but doesn't start at all. This is confusing. You mentioned trying the same PSU with a different (AM3+) motherboard before, where fans were spinning alongside internal devices like hard drives.
It seems the PSU might not be the issue. Would you try booting with only the two original drives?
