Hey everyone! Planning to get a 7900xtx, ASUS Hyper M.2 card and maybe a sound card. On the Am5 platform there are 28 PCIe lanes, with the GPU using 16. NVME SSDs take up 4 lanes each at full capacity. Can I install the expansion card without affecting all four drives? Some sources say using a PCIe slot might block an M.2 slot, and certain M.2 slots could disable SATA ports too. I checked the ASUS ProArt X670E Creator Mobos – it lists 2 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (supports x16 or x8/x8 modes) plus 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (works in x2 mode). The PCIEX16_3 shares bandwidth with the M.2_3 slot. To use it, you’d need to enable PCIEX16_3 in BIOS. This means you can put the GPU in one of the 5.0 16x slots? If the 4.0 slot supports x2 mode, then splitting it into smaller configurations for SSDs isn’t possible.

I don't understand your query, but I own a Gen 4 Asus Hyper M.2 card, and it's really nice! It was included with my board.

you should be fine. Many of the daughter PCI card for ssds can use 2 x ssd but if your choice does not the worst that happens is that PCI 5 x 16 will drop to x 8 which most GPUs will never saturate. the PCI card for SSD should have the PCI as 4 x4 as far as I am aware. been looking into the situation myself but I have 3 on board slots and also use 2 1 x ssd cards. A pic gen 4 with gen 4 ssd no impact on my GPU but knocks out 2 x sata which is fine as i no longer use sata. and I discovered a Gen 3 daughter card that sits in the tiny PCI express slot that holds a 2TB gen 4 ssd for my backups.

No problem at all! Let me know if you've filled all your M.2 slots and want additional options.

You must use all 16 lanes for the drives to function properly. Splitting the x8 into x4x4 won’t help since only two slots will be active on the card.

The setup of four NVMe SSDs in an M.2 card inside a PCIe 5 x16 slot can work, especially if the card is bifurcated and supported. It may change the PCIe lane count for other devices depending on the new configuration.

Great details there... this was a puzzle I couldn't solve, so I ended up with two separate cards. Time to start experimenting.

Sorry, I'm not very familiar with lane count. The hyper m.2 claims to support up to 4 NVMe SSDs in theory. If an x16 slot can run in 4x mode, you could split it into 4x4x4x4 without affecting speed. Thanks for asking!

Select the option in the bios and proceed. Four SSDs are available.

Visit the ASUS compatibility guide for the Hyper M2. For more details, check the page at https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1037507/. Your motherboard supports only 4x4x4x4 on the first PCIe 5.0 16x lane. The next slot can hold 4x4, and the PCIe 4.0 lane is limited to 2. You should distribute 16 lanes across both PCIe lanes—8 on the first and 8 on the second. There are also 2 lanes available on PCIe 3 for the M.2 slot. If you need a GPU, the maximum configuration is using the PCIe 1 lane with an 8x5.0 Hyper M.2 2nVME PCI-E2 slot and two lanes on PCIe 3.
