Increase performance and quality.
Hello, I’m confident in my tech skills and managed to set up a PC myself. I used to have a lot of knowledge, but with all the recent changes, I’ve fallen behind quite a bit. My concern is when I upgrade RAM—especially with an i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 1660 4GB. I added an 8GB NVMe stick and two more 8GB sticks, but I haven’t seen much improvement. I heard that for an i5, boosting RAM might not make much difference. Is this true? If someone could guide me on which components to prioritize first, that would be a big help. Thanks!
The CPU generation in question is likely modern. With 24GB of RAM it should suffice for most needs, though your processor might set the performance ceiling. Starting fresh, pairing two 16GB modules is a solid choice. Unless you frequently hit 80% utilization, you're probably fine with the available memory.
With a 24GB RAM and a minimum of DDR 2400, memory isn’t the main concern. Do you have an NVMe boot device available?
For an SSD of any type (NVMe or otherwise), you can comfortably use 8GB for everyday tasks. The move from 4 to 8 or 8 to 16GB feels significant compared to 8 to higher capacities unless you're handling memory-heavy work like video editing, photo manipulation, or certain games. Keep in mind that browsers such as Chrome can easily exceed 8GB of RAM when many tabs are open. Still, choosing an SSD over a traditional drive remains the most important factor.
