I prefer components that last long so I choose the latest options. For gaming, an Intel i5 12400 offers solid value. If you need extra efficiency and versatility, consider the 12600 or 12700. The 12700 provides more threads than the 9900KF.

Upgrades are limited to the same generation as your current motherboard. Ideally, aim for something like an i7 7700K for enhanced hyperthreading and multitasking performance. However, you won’t see dramatic improvements unless you replace the board itself.

The 9900KF isn't suited for Z270 boards. Although the socket labels match, the pin configuration differs, allowing only 6th and 7th generation parts with 100 and 200 series chipsets. 8th and 9th generation require 300 series chipsets.

I wasn't considering that before... it looks like the top choice for this motherboard is a 7 generation CPU. For upgrading, what would work well depends on your needs beyond just extra PCI slots? A full ATX board offers more flexibility and better support for future components compared to other options.

The 5600X can be found on Newegg for around $225, and you can combine it with a simple $70 B550 board such as the Asrock B550M-HDV or a solid $100 model like the MSI B550 Gaming Plus. This setup puts you in the $295 to $325 range for a 6c/12t AMD. If you prefer Intel, the 12400 is available for $210, and you can pair it with a basic B660 board like the Asrock B660M Pro RS ($110) or the Asus Prime B660-Plus D4 ($160), which ranges from $320 to $370 for the same configuration.

You’re not focusing on costs right now. I just want to focus on performing without worrying about spending too much, especially since I plan to upgrade my GPU in a year. Overclocking newer Intel processors sounds appealing if it helps me reach the K-core and Z chipset goals. Staying with Intel makes sense for me.
