Hey there, I'm working with my gaming PC in a virtual machine course at college. With all the VMs running simultaneously for my assignments, I realized my RAM was nearly full. I’m thinking about an upgrade but my setup has four slots filled with Corsair Vengeance 3200 8GB modules totaling 32 GB. I’m curious about the best way forward. My specs: CPU is Intel Core i7-12700K at 3.6 GHz, 12 cores; cooling system is Noctua NH-D15; motherboard is Gigabyte Z690; RAM is Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2x8GB); storage is Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2; graphics is EVGA FTW3 RTX 3060 Ti LHR. I’m wondering if swapping two 8GB sticks for a 32GB kit would help, and could it affect performance if the modules aren’t identical? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Performance concerns? Not necessarily. Compatibility worries? Possibly. The 2x16GB model is likely to use different memory chips compared to the 2x8GB version, which could affect how well it works with your existing sticks. In reality, at a speed of 3200MT/s, incompatibility is unlikely but not impossible. If you could replace everything with a 2x32GB setup, that would be ideal, though probably more costly.
