My motherboard has been reported to have poor VRM cooling. I installed a new fan and tested it with Cinebench. The maximum temperature reached was 43°C, and the speed remained stable. I was impressed. However, after just a few minutes of gaming, performance dropped significantly. The game I tried was Bo3, which is poorly optimized but my favorite. It crashed on me, not my computer. When I restart everything to stock settings, it doesn’t crash again. I’m confused about why the stability issue persists despite following instructions. Also, my 3rd and 4th core speeds are at 2.0GHz. Could this be because I disabled certain settings like c6, APM, or cTDP? I’d really appreciate help with this.

The height you can achieve with OC depends on the condition of your chip. I believe 4.6 might be too high. All Z97 motherboards should handle overclocking well, and any variations will be negligible.

It's disappointing to note that an APU lacks the power to compete with a strong card such as a GTX970.

Sorry to say, the APU isn’t powerful enough to compete with a strong card such as a GTX970.
Would upgrading help? An i7-4790k might offer some improvements? My friend is getting an upgrade while I’m keeping my current setup.

You have a solid companion.
An I7-4790K performs well, especially when boosted slightly.
A motherboard should be included because your system won't function without it.

Considered boosting the 4790K to around 4.6ghz. I believe your motherboard can handle it. He aimed for the newest and best options at that time.
EDIT: Is this a suitable overclocking setup? MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150

The maximum overclock you can achieve depends on your chip quality. I think 4.6 might be a bit too high. All Z97 motherboards should handle decent overclocking. Any differences are going to be minimal. I've seen some users reach up to 4.9ghz, but it's probably not a big deal.
