I've just noticed this odd problem with my iMac. It seems related to the operating system. I have a late 2011 21.5" model running High Sierra 10.13.6. AirPods are connected. When I adjust the sound settings while music plays, switching to the "input" tab changes the audio quality to a low setting. It reverts back to normal only when I go to "output," but then the computer crashes and restarts right away. I hear an unusual beep at startup, followed by a "press any key" screen. It looks like the Bluetooth device's communication mode triggers an emergency shutdown. Even though it's an older MacOS, I thought it was worth mentioning.
