I'm struggling to choose the right GPU brand and model.
I'm struggling to choose the right GPU brand and model.
As mentioned before, adapters are necessary when using older ATX 2.x power supplies that lack a dedicated ATX 3.x power cable. For example, with my Seasonic unit. When I need to run a GPU from the RTX 40-series or 50-series, I must use the adapter that comes with the GPU or purchase a direct cable similar to what you find for Corsair units. However, not every PSU brand offers this direct cable separately, as it is designed specifically for their own power supplies.
The RTX 30-series requires a different connector and isn’t compatible with the RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs. Specifically, the RTX 30-series adapter uses a 12-pin PCI-E connector, whereas the one for the newer GPUs is 16-pin PCI-E. The extra four pins in the latter are essential for the GPU to function properly.
Using an adapter comes with several drawbacks:
1. It introduces an additional point of failure.
2. It can increase power fluctuations.
3. Cable organization becomes more complicated, because with an adapter you often need at least two 8-pin PCI-E cables from the PSU, whereas a dedicated 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 cable is all in one.
Oh ok that make sense. I thought all brand PSU has that cable available to buy. I only usually buy corsair PSU because it's what I'm most comfortable with.
Thanks for the help. I'll buy that corsair cable so I can use my current 750w psu once I choose a 5070 ti
I own a Corsair AX1000 PSU and I’m using the same cable you mentioned (my version has individual sleeves). It works well, so you should definitely consider getting it.
